Developing Positive Character Traits

Summer has come and gone. I will miss Summer, but I love Autumn. The crisper weather, the color anticipation and then the full glory of it, somehow comforts me. Wearing sweaters and sweatshirts feels like the hugs that have disappeared from daily greetings. Gazing out my windows, being in my yard, walking my neighborhood, envelops me with a gentleness that I need right now. Autumn is the season that allows me to breath in the beauty of life because life is about endings as much as it is about beginnings. We think of this time of year as something we are losing and await Spring when all is new again and rebirth happens, but now is when life is truly explained. It is in the tapestry of color and the cool mornings that morph to warm afternoons that then recede to coolness again. Like the rollercoaster that takes us up and down, Autumn lifts us even as it plunges us into Winter.

Spring 2020
I cannot think of another time in my life when character counts more than now. If you are healthy and able to provide for yourself and your family, I hope you are showing gratitude and generosity. If you are struggling in any way, I hope you are able to reach out and get the support you need. If you can be of assistance in some way to those in need, I hope you are finding a safe way to offer your services. If you are working from home and also schooling your children and keeping them emotionally strong, I hope you are finding joy in your daily activities and not feeling burdened. If you are tired, feeling down, anxious, stressed, conflicted, I hope you have a spiritual connection that offers you some calm. These are very tough times for many of us, but these are devastating times for a great number of our fellow human beings.  Complaining, pointing fingers, and insulting is not productive and will not ease your pain or anyone else’s. Please be kind, be understanding, and offer solace.

Whooo do you want to be when you grow up?

This is a far more important question than what do you want to be when you grow up. The kind of person you want to be as an adult takes root now, while you are growing.

As you read The Way to Be From A to Z, you will see how easy it is to truly be the who you aspire to be. (Oh, and by the way, it is never too late to grow and become the who you know you can be!)

The Way to Be From A to Z, by R. B. Schimmel is the children’s book all adults wish they had growing up. Using the abc picture book concept, R.B. Schimmel provides children of all ages with ways to become strong, positive people. For every letter, the book provides a guiding lesson that children of all ages should live by. The letter A says be affectionate; letter B asks that they are benevolent; C begs them to be curious. In these bits of wisdom children, as well as adults, are given the tools to grow and develop good character traits that will serve them well.
