Start of the School Year Poem

A new school year is met with much excitement on the part of our children, but it can also be a time of anxiety and stress. So much is expected of our young people today, and they do so want to please the people who are important in their lives. Too often, our children think they are failing us because the don’t think they are measuring up. When they believe they have disappointed us, they also believe that they are loved less. This is true for elementary students, middle school students, and high school students. I taught both middle school and high school students. I would hear them express their fears; not getting good enough grades, not being the star of the team, not getting into the best school, not getting high enough test scores, not having enough friends or being popular enough. Sometimes these youngsters would feel confused about well, just about everything, but be afraid to talk to their parents for fear of not being understood or accepted. One day I sat down, and with all of this weighing on my mind, wrote what I would tell my own children if they were indeed still children. It is what I truly feel when I look at my grandchildren now, and it is what I hope and pray their parents say to them each and every day. I hope you will too.

You know I think you are awfully cute
but that’s not why I love you,
I love you because you are mine

Sometimes I think you are oh so funny,
and your antics make me laugh,
but that’s not why I smile at you.
I smile because I love you,
and I love you because you are mine.

When you use your amazing talents
I beam with joy and pride,
but your abilities are not what make me proud,
I am proud because I love you,
and I love you because you are mine.

When I see you being kind
I want to hold and hug you,
but this affection that I feel is not because you are good,
I want to hold and hug you because I love you,
and I love you because you are mine.

My love for you does not depend
on what you do or don’t.
My love for you will never end
because of what you do or don’t.

My love for you will only grow
and that is what I need you to know.
I love you my darling child.
I love you because you are mine.

Love the poem! I am enjoying reading the blogs. We need constant reminders of these important character traits as we can easily lose focus in our busy daily lives.
